Common Sense is Not Common

By definition, shouldn’t common sense be common? From my experience it is really not all that common and those that have it are blessed. When you use common sense you are able to identify problems in advance, solve simple issues that arise, go with the flow and deal with interruptions.

According to the dictionary, common sense is “sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts”.

Some situations I have come across that make me go HUH?

There is an apartment building in my neighborhood that is undergoing asbestos removal. They have the areas they are working on cordoned off so people know to keep out. Inside this cordoned off area is the bike rack with about 20 bicycles locked to it. To get to their bikes, these folks will need to climb over the barrier into the work area, unlock their bikes and lift them over the barrier.

HUH? The people who set up this work zone clearly were not using common sense.

Have you ever spent time in a hospital cafeteria? They serve some really good food. They also serve a whole bunch of junk food. They have soda, chips, cookies, and fried food. Are they trying to get more customers patients admitted?

I would advocate that a hospital can only serve healthy food. What do you think?

I love homegrown tomatoes!

I tend to talk to my patients about what food is on their tray. Apparently they know more about their health condition than the dietitians and physicians. I look at their tray piled high with white rice or pasta and think – really? This food is approved for the diabetic with out of control blood sugars?  Yesterday mornings breakfast was a sugary danish and a hard-boiled egg. HUH?

The dining room staff roll their cart thru the rehab floor every afternoon filled with snacks. It is filled with soda, cookies, and crackers. Really? I work with some morbidly obese patients who struggle not only with their obesity but with the health complications that go along with it. We can do better than soda and chocolate chip cookies for a snack. Where are the veggies?

We can do better

I am 3/4 of the way through my tough month at work. Guess I am getting cranky! I am dealing with it though! Yesterday I was home, showered and in my pj’s by 5:15PM!

An old boss once told me I had more common sense than most people. I didn’t think much about it at the time but now I think she gave me a really wonderful compliment! I think I will give her a call to thank her!
