Shades of Grey

If you had to pick just one color of the rainbow to love, which color would you pick? Do you have an absolute favorite or does it depend on the day? Does it depend on the season? Does it depend on your mood?

I know this seems like a silly question but it might help me figure out if we can be friends.

I haven’t done a single bit or research on this topic, however if I had to venture a guess, I would think that the people who could pick one single color without a moments hesitation need to be sure about things in life. They like predictability, smooth sailing, and calm seas. Uncertainty makes them anxious and being able to provide the “correct” answer is more important than speaking the truth.

Some people always know what they want and how they feel. They are rock steady and never seem to waiver. They never change their mind. I used to be this type of person. Green was my favorite color, tea was my morning beverage, and I ate a strict vegetarian diet. Now I’m not sure I could give you a simple answer about my favorite color so I will go with the rainbow! I prefer coffee over tea and eat everything and anything.

Some people see the world as black and white and this makes some things easier in life. There is usually a clear yes or no in their mind before the question is even asked. They know what to say before they open their mouth. They don’t really need to think for themelves or make a hard decision. These folks rarely change their minds.

I tend to go with the flow but sometimes need to speak my truth or voice my need for one option over another. You won’t hear me talk sex, politics or religion unless you are in my inner circle and haven’t attempted to coerce me to share my views.

I see the world less in black and white and more in many shades of grey. I see both sides to most arguments, can understand many points of view. I rarely feel absolutely positive about anything. Honestly, I think this makes me a more sensitive and empathetic person but perhaps harder to figure out. I tend to be quiet (except with my family) and keep my opinions to myself until I have them fairly well developed and then I post them for the world to see!

Today, my favorite color is purple (in memory of Mother Fran) and my drink of choice is seltzer. Once 5:00 PM arrives, it will be red wine; hopfully a Zinfandel or Carbernet. But if my sisters open a bottle of white, I won’t complain. So raise your glass and lets toast to having an open mind and plenty of rainbows.

  1. Oh how this resonates with me. We are very similar. My younger self was solidly type A. My older self is solidly a mix of A, B, and maybe even a dash of C. I think many trips around the sun will do that to a person. And I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. ~ Thank you for your thoughts.
