Don’t Get Derailed!

In my last post, The Power of Changing Your Beliefs, I talked about the importance of eating real food as a key component to solve the health puzzle. Eating right has become a habit when I am at home, cooking for myself and my honey. It isn’t hard to do and it causes me no stress.

This week, I will be traveling and that can easily disrupt my good eating habits. Can you relate? I mean, not having access to my go to snacks means I get too hungry and that can throw all of my good intentions out of the window. Going out to eat several times in one week makes it hard to choose health. If I don’t watch out, I will start ordering fries deep fried in a vat of vegetable oil. I will forget to “hold the roll” with my burger or order some delicious sounding pizza made with white flour and sugar. This will cause my sugar cravings to go into overdrive and my good habits will get derailed quicker than you can say “chocolate cone with chocolate sprinkles”!

To keep myself from being derailed while away from home, I have spent this morning prepping food to take with us on vacation. I have some healthy homemade soup that Child #7 stuck in the freezer. Some yummy stew that Child #2 left behind. I just cut up a bunch of nuts and mixed up some flax seed meal with cinnamon and turmeric to make my nut cereal. We will have hard-boiled eggs, nuts and a few Lara Bars to deal with the snack attack! I will make some chicken salad with homemade mayo and a tossed salad for lunch on the road. I do make the prettiest salads! I offered to cook dinner at my nephews house one night so I know at least one meal will follow my healthy eating guidelines.

I figure we will prepare our own breakfast, lunch and a couple of dinners. We can eat out the rest of the time and stick to our guidelines to a degree that makes sense to us. The occasional sandwich, slice of pizza or ice cream cone is not going to kill us when taken in context of our healthy eating habits. I just want to set us up for success when traveling away from home. We have worked too hard to change our eating habits for the better to blow it in one week on the road.

Now that is a better choice! Image by pepperlola from Pixabay

Traveling does make eating healthy a bit tricky but a little bit of planning goes a long way. We will be driving for about 8 hours, spending 3 days at Shenandoah National Park and 2 days with my nephew, his wife and their 3 awesome kids. Bringing some healthy food from home will help me eat real food even when I am on vacation! My honey and I even splurged and bought an iceless cooler that plugs into the car. This will be its maiden voyage and I am sure it will be chock full of healthy food!
